1. My Rant About My Education

I’m going to rant.  I know ranting doesn’t change anything, but it does make me feel better.  It also gives me the motivation to change.

I FEEL CHEATED.  Cheated by the education system that did not prepare me for the realities of the world.

Now I could go into a lot of areas that I feel I was not taught.  But I’ll address just one: computers; and more specifically the internet.

Everyday I realize more and more that the people that can manipulate the power of computers will be the one’s in large demand.  And manipulation can mean a lot: creating websites and software through designing and developing; or even writing powerful copy and employing effective internet marketing campaigns.

Maybe the reason why I was not taught these things is because the internet was relatively new when I was in high school (2001-2005).  But not really, right?!  I took one web design class that taught the most basic HTML and that’s about it.  It was pretty much a joke.

Sure now I have a blog that I designed myself from theme options on Wordpress, but that’s the very basics.  I feel being able to create awesome websites easily and for a variety of uses is going to be a huge competitive advantage in the job market.  And this includes making sites to promote yourself and creations, plus being able to use these techniques at your actual job.  I fore see “web development” as a primary requirement to many job descriptions.  This is why I feel behind.

I’m cool with not being taught more about the internet, web dev and basic programming in high school.  But what really bothers me is that I even know about these things until I graduated college.  I really had no clue how important they are, and how ingrained they are in our world.
